Idaho Drivers Education

If you are a resident of Idaho, and are age fifteen or older, you will be eligible to drive on the roads of Idaho providing you have met all of the requirements.

If you are under the age of seventeen, in order to obtain your license you will be required to graduate from an approved driver’s training program and participate in the Graduated Driver’s License Program and then complete a Supervised Instruction Period (SIP). Once the SIP requirements have been met, you may apply for a driver’s license that restricts your driving to daytime hours until you reach the age of sixteen – unless supervised as specified by the Idaho Division of Motor Vehicles.

Approved Driver training programs in Idaho consist of thirty hours of classroom instruction, six hours of in car observation and six hours of actual driving with a trained instructor. These requirements must be met if you are under the age of seventeen and applying for a license.

If you have successfully completed drivers training in another state (even if you did not get your license) acceptable proof that this training meets or exceeds Idaho’s requirements will also be acceptable.

Prior to being enrolled in any driver’s training you must obtain an instruction permit which will be valid only for the purposes of this instruction. Once the instruction is complete you become immediately eligible for a supervised instruction period which is required by Idaho’s Graduated Driver’s License program. The Graduated Driver’s License Program in Idaho requires that for a minimum of four months you are accompanied by a supervising driver who is at least twenty one and occupies the front passenger seat; all occupants of the vehicle are using age-appropriate restraints; all laws regarding all substances are adhered to and finally that you accumulate a minimum of fifty hours of driving time and that ten of those hours are at night. Any violations of any traffic laws during this time will result in your Supervised Instruction Permit being cancelled and will also result in your being unable to apply for another four months. Do not forget you will also be required to take an eye exam and pass a written test as well.

In order to apply for a permit, you will have to provide certain documents. These documents include proof of residency in Idaho, proof of your age and your identity, your Social Security Card, and if you suffer from any type of medical condition or visual disorder you must provide a physicians statement that certifies that you are able to safely operate a vehicle, if you are under 18 you will be required to have a parent or legal guardian to sign a consent form for you, certification of completion of drivers training if you are under the age of 17, and a statement that verifies you are in compliance with the school attendance provisions of Idaho.
